i, I have had problems with American Fidelity from day ONE since I had to retire early because of Permanent nerve damage done by a mesh sling put in me 2001. That is a long story and I saw all kind of NUT Dr.s the next 12 yrs who did re-surgeries that probably did more harm than good. Torture treatment of every kind etc. FINALLY after 12long yrs of my nerve damage getting worse to the point I couldn\'t walk a few months before my removal surgery. I had found the BEST Dr. who removes more mesh slings and mesh than anyone in the world and unfortunately one of the very few skilled and brave enough to do it. He\'s in a MAJOR Hospital in L.A. with all Initials! I had American Fidelity since the early 80\'s when I started teaching and when I could I increased my coverage as I could to $2100.00 a month by the time I had the one surgery I never recovered from. I had had MAJOR surgeries before and did fine. I knew the minute I opened my eyes something was VERY VERY WRONG! So in 2001 I had a surgery with my Gynecologist who had done my hysterectomy and I needed another minor surgery done. I hardly leaked at ALL but she insisted I go to an Urologist also who told me he would just be there to STAND by! He did MUCH more than that after she finished. He put a mesh sling in during ANOTHER surgery without my knowledge. DAY ONE I couldn\'t sit and leaked worse than EVER and had labor type pain I\'ve had for 13yrs now 24/7. Sometimes like early labor sometimes like LATE. But with labor pains ou KNOW they eventually will end! So I constantly hurt especially when sitting and constantly leaked. Two things that don\'t go along with teaching which I loved and had done about 20yrs. I took a 1yr leave of absence in case the 2nd Dr. I was for a 2nd opinion was able to fix whatever happened?!We had to PAY for a 2nd opinion because our HMO would not send me to anyone but the original surgeon\'s partner in the same office! NOT! The 2nd Dr. examined me and told me I immediately needed another bladder surgery because the sling had tightened up way too much. So almost 1yr to the date later I had a surgery to try to loosen it but it did no good. They have found out since those type surgeries usually do more harm than good. Because these meshes break up day ONE like mine or make growths like mine did or yhrs later. BUT they will break up, it is like having a ticking time bomb in you. Some women have them for yrs with no problems. I am happy for them but if they read some of the HORROR stories they would very much want them out of their bodies. The manufacture who made mine made their mesh partly out of a Pork Product that was supposed to be safe but also partly out of a product they bought from a Petroleum Company who TOLD them it was NOT for use inside humans! But they bought it anyway. I still have pieces of it very tiny because it is much like the plastic milk jugs are made out of it NEVER disintegrates! Not much was known about mesh then except companies were trying to push Dr.s to use these KITS which Dr.s thought they could surely do! Mine was put in 0ne yr before the FDA approved it! Still don\'t know how that happened? So for 12yrs I went to 1 Nut Dr. after another meanwhile having constant childbirth type pain 24/7 not just sitting at first laying did some relief after a while it didn\'t help any. Some Dr.s thought I was an \"emotional\" female. One told me mine had ALL dissolved! just went away! I have 3vials somewhere with growths to prove otherwise. The mesh sling itself had grown as thick as the Dr.s finger he said and wrapped around and around my urethra! NO wonder I couldn\'t sit from DAY ONE! Good news in 2012 the day after the mesh removal I could walk the next day and the last few months it got so bad I had to use a cane! BAD news the non stop pain never got better. SO I again went a 2,000 mile trip in an RV because I could in no way sit down. He gave me many tests that show tiny bits of this mesh are still in my nerves and muscles SO TINY they can never be removed. So I had an Inter-Stem unit put in last summer with 2surgeries. It is attached to my pelvic nerves and muscles like a pacemaker. I have a remote to control the impulses. So I can now sit 1hr for the 1st time in MANY yrs with the InterStem and strong pain pills prescribed I take exactly as told. Doesn\'t sound like much but it means I can go out to eat with my husband and attend a church service now or something not much over 1hr! American Fidelity was OK for paying occasional days off etc. back when I taught. BUT when I became Permanently Disabled they kept lowering my amount of coverage immediately from $2100.00 a month to $1100.00 a month to now $800.00 a month. All because I supposedly had a pre-existing condition. When a faulty piece of crap medical device is put in your body that will break up day one or yrs later that without you being told what can happen or in my case that it WOULD happen that is NOT a pre-existing condition!. Mine had wrapped around and into nerves and muscles and made BIG growths everywhere! Once I got my Teachers Pension they lowered the payment and once I finally got SS DISABILITY after a two yr appeal they lowered it to the 1/4 the coverage they are supposed to pay you the rest of your life! I TOO had them come back and say I owed such and such the months they paid when I got back pay for SS Disability. My lawyer immediately sent them a letter saying how much they owed HER for getting my Social Security Disability Benefits that saved them a LOT in the long run. They get to the point they just stop your benefits until you apply for Social Security! All the sudden after she billed them for all her hours etc. involved in getting me income somehow the bill they were charging which I was paying by not getting any checks for several yrs VANISHED! It was called EVEN! BROTHER! So to anyone who gets billed from them for money they paid you for months you were paid back for pension and or SS Disability be SURE to have your Attorney write them a letter saying what they owe THEM since they were the ones to get you paid a regular check again. There are 70,000 cases now in U.S. District courts against Mesh companies, mostly women but some MEN who got it for hernias. Some day I hope to have enough strength after THAT is over to go back after AF to show them I did NOT have a pre-existing condition and did not LIE on my forms I filled out! They DO pay you for being sick even in the summer so remember that teachers and even on spring break or Christmas break etc. But they will never tell you any of this and their handbook of policies was so complicated even my attorney couldn\'t make heads or tales of it! IT is sickening to pay a company for YRS while you are working but then when you need THEM they try everything to wiggle our of their responsibilities. They have me fill out a re-qualifying form from my physician much more often then SS Disability does! At least ONCE A YR. THEY don\'t care if SS still considers me disabled. They want you to forget or quit trying to get one filled out and then they will cut you off! Or they hope you croak! I know the Dr. gets tired of filling it out and when I tell them I just get $200.00 a month that doesn\'t mean much to many Dr.s but it does ME! I didn\'t go to school many yrs while working and having kids to get a Bachelors and then a Masters after my 1st teaching job to have to stop because of one fateful day in 2001 when I was just 42yrs old! So don\'t believe all their mumbo-jumbo! At least get a lawyer where the first visit is free and ASK?!. It certainly will not hurt! It is amazing after My Attorney sent them a letter saying how much they owed HER how quick their bill to me just went away! EXACT AMOUNT! This isn\'t RETIREMENT when you are mostly Home bound and in pain 24/7! But I try to be thankful for the small things we all take for granted and realize NO amount of money in the world is worth your good health! Hang in there, Retired? TOO Young!
