In April of 2012 my late husband had heart surgery to replace a valve. He did extremely well and by July was back at work full time. On July 21st of that year a teen age girl driving a pickup and texting at the same time T boned our car. One week later my husband's surgery came apart and he had to have another surgery to repair it. Unfortunately on August 26th of 2012 he passed away. He had Assurant insurance through his job. They immediately paid the first portion. However, when I tried to get them to pay the accidental they hem hawed around, telling me that they'd have to examine all the evidence. It was clear from the police report and the death certificate that the primary cause of my husband's death was the car accident. If he had not been in a wreck, he would still be alive today. Eventually Assurant denied the accidental portion, saying that the cause of death was underlying heart disease. He had no heart disease at the time of the wreck. His surgery was almost totally healed and the only thing that could have damaged it was something like the impact from a wreck.
Assurant should have paid that claim. They're a fly by night company and I would recommend that everyone stay far, far away from them. If they handle their health insurance with the same lack of ethics they could be dangerous. Please, please warn people about doing business with a company that cheats people so easily. Someone's life could depend on it.
