Patricia's complaint:
October 26, 2013

Insurance Company: Independence Blue Cross
Coverage Type: Health Insurance

  • Claim Handling - Delays upon Delays
  • Claim Handling - Denial of Claim

I have a high deductible plan, however the doctor told me that my colonoscopy would be covered 100% because I was over 50 and never had one and it is preventative medicine. I called the insurance company two times to confirm as I did not have money to do the test. Both times I was told this was true it is 100% covered. ( I called twice to make sure I got the same answer.)

So I went and scheduled my test knowing you are to do this at age 50 and I was now 55yrs old. I had the test done 4/5/2013. As of today 10/26/13 I am told the doctors fee and the anesthesia fee is not covered. Imagine that I am told 100% covered but I get a bill for the doctor and anesthesia. I guess I am to lay on the table and have divine intervention give me the test with no anesthesia, then the colonoscopy would be 100% paid for. But no I am getting harassed by collection agencies to pay the doctor and anesthesia.

I break down and pay the doctor fee, but the anesthesia I am not going to pay. How can you have the procedure down without being put out? All the medical information we are given "100% covered is a lie and misleading" I pay my premium and it is not cheap on time all the time and when I have my first claim I get denied! I have called 5 times to discuss this and 5 times the ladies at Blue Cross said it was submitted wrong we will resubmit and the anesthesia is covered. Well I called yesterday and for the first time I get oh no you have to pay for it. WHY? I argued and said I called two times before to double check, I called 5 times after and was told 7 times this was covered now you tell me yesterday I am not covered for the anesthesia. I asked her have you had a colonoscopy without anesthesia? How do they expect me to have a test and not have anesthesia, what kind of loop holes are these insurances putting in our policies so they don't have to pay? Is this legal? All the brochures say 100% on preventative medicine, THIS IS A LIE, I hope someone out there can do a class action law suit. I guess if I ever need surgery I lay on the table and ask for divine intervention to be my doctor and anesthesiologist and laboratory person because all the extra is not covered? This is like ordering an expensive meal and all you get is the meat because potatoes and vegetables and salad are all extra expense.

Please someone do something, my anesthesia bill should be paid for. Why are we even paying if they can't hold up their end of the bargain?
