As a former employee of Safeco in the Homeowner property sector, I feel it is important for any Safeco home insurance policy holder to be aware of the unethical practices Safeco uses for handling property damage claims. Last year Safeco made changes to its best practices for handling roof replacement claims from storm damage. Safeco enforces a best practices policy that all roofs are repairable and adjusters shall NOT PAY TO REPLACE ANY ROOFS! You could have shingles missing off of all elevations of your roof and Safeco will NOT pay to replace the roof, only repair. They will make you go through miles of red tape in order to get a full roof replacement, if you are even lucky enough to get that.

In an executive meeting held to relay this new practice to its adjusters/employees. The executive in charge of the meeting stated, and I quote "WE KNOW THAT CUSTOMER SERVICE WILL DROP AND WE KNOW THAT WE WILL LOSE CUSTOMERS, HOWEVER, WE DON'T CARE!" It will be more cost effective to weed out the customers that complain and keep the ones that don't.

After the hurricane last year in Louisina. Property managers were sent out to inspect properties behind the adjusters. Any adjuster that paid to replace a roof upfront was deviated in the re-inspection report for the full amount less the repair cost which they feel is a standard repair minumum of $500. In essence, That is your deductible, so YOU DON'T GET PAID. Any adjusters that were found to pay for full roof replacements upfront afterwards were written up and would possibly face termination if a property manager inspected another roof that was fully paid for upfront again.

If you have a hail storm in your area. Be prepared for the Safeco adjuster to only pay for the elevation that was damaged in the direction of the hail storm. The undamaged other side of your roof will not be replaced and you will be responsible for paying for the other side of the roof out of your own pocket!!

If you are a Safeco Policy holder, you need to be aware of these unethical practices and report it to the Insurance regulations board in your state if this happens to you.

After reading this mans complaint,mine is very similar .I live in New York, we had a severe wind storm and singles were blown off my hip roof,front back sides,it was horrendous. My contractor said I needed a new roof at a cost of $12,000. Safeco adjuster came out and tells me there is no way Safeco will pay for a new roof and hands me a check for $400. as I have a $500. deductible.He was rude, obnoxious and clearly did not give a damn about my home,roof or my problem I will be checking with friends, neighbours,Better Business Bureau,Chamber of Commerce before every signing for insurance again.As far as I am concerned this company is as crooked as they come,they need to be investigated .I have a feeling plenty more people have been screwed over just like me and I am pissed and will do everything in my power to make sure they are looked into and people are warned.

This is unbelievable!! The same exact thing happened to me in New Jersey. After the hurricane ended. I went outside to asses my damage and found that the shingles were torn off at about 10 different areas of shingles missing off the front section of my roof and approximately 15 different areas of shingles missing of the rear elevation. I immediately filed a claim with Safeco for the damages. The first person I talked to could not even answer any of the questions I had about the claim process. It took about five days for my adjuster to finally contact me. His demeanor over the phone was rude and impolite. He acted as if he had better things to do than deal with my claim. After hanging up the phone with the adjuster I had a feeling that my claim was not going to go well. I contacted a contractor to be at the property at the same time as the adjuster. Along with the missing shingles on the front and rear of my roof, my contractor advised me that there were also creased shingles everywhere and that the roof would definitely need to be replaced. The adjuster showed up and was again quite rude to me and my contractor. On the roof I could hear the adjuster arguing with my contractor that the roof was not in bad shape and only needed a repair. He came down and went into his vehicle and wrote a bogus estimate for 1,200.00. I had a $1,000.00 deductible so the adjuster gave me a check for $200 bucks. What a joke!!!
