Insurance Company: Aetna
Coverage Type: Health Insurance
- Claim Handling - Denial of Claim
At 69.5 years of age, Aetna plan primary care physician directed me to get a Zostavax shingles vaccination. They can't keep the medication in their office due to shelf life and required storage temps. I went to Kroger where I have had one time prescriptions filled under my Aetna plan (maintenance meds require mail order). The vaccination cost $200 and Aetna denied the claim on the grounds that - now for some reason - Kroger isn't part of their program. I can't understand why one time prescriptions are okay but my Shingles vaccination isn't. Sounds like a loophole they have come up with.

I am having the same difficulty with Blue Cross. I want the shingles vaccination and there is no doctor within 2 hours drive that will carry it in their office. My medical insurance will not pay for the vaccination if it is given to me in a drug store such as Rite-Aid. I have appealed their decision but it was denied. What should I do?
