Insurance Company: State Farm Insurance
Coverage Type: Business Insurance
- Claim Handling - Denial of Claim
I have carried business liability insurance for many years with State Farm, as per the terms of my office lease and have never filed a claim. When Hurricane Sandy left my building without power for a prolonged period, I filed a loss of income claim with State Farm, which the policy offered.
On November 15, 2012, I received a call from Claim Representative Vicki King, who asked me questions about damage to the building incurred by the storm. It was clear to me that she was attempting to extract information that would mitigate the claim and I told her quite honestly that I had no information to provide as mine is a four-story building with many offices within. I referred her to a building representative, who later told me that his experience with Ms. King was similar to mine, i.e., she asked him questions about damage to the building incurred by the storm.
Although the representative told Ms. King that the chain link fencing separating the building from an adjacent lot had been destroyed, he could not verify that the building had incurred structural damage. On this basis, my claim was denied and I was left with a significant loss of income. A subsequent conversation with a Mr. Chuck Armstrong was equally futile and, to add insult to injury, he attempted to read me the part of my policy which he claimed invalidated my claim. I would steer clear of State Farm, as least with regard to Business Liabilty insurance.
