I have had State Farm Insurance since I was 16 YOA and my parents had them most of their life. When the hurricanes hit Florida in 2004 and 2005 back to back I suffered damages. My house was flooded for about 10 days in about 5 inches of water. It came through the siding of the house and I was without power for almost 2 weeks the first time. I work in emergency services so there wasn't much I could do to fix anything.
Parts of my roof were damaged and water leaked into my upstairs. The mold began immediately. My policy covered that; however, State Farm was untruthful and claimed that my policy didn't cover mold. (They have yet to prove that) They sent an adjuster from Texas to estimate my damages. He estimated a little over $10,000.00 for a new roof, fence, (acreage), siding, replace drywall, electrical, paint upstairs and some portions downstairs. They cut me a check for apprx. $4,900.00. He advised when I got the work done they would write me another check for $2,700.00 and some change. I explained that I could not do all the work for that money. My deductible was close to $2,000.00. My ceiling fans caught fire and the water put the fire out. The man wanted to argue with me about replacing the ceiling fans. Unbelievable! The mold was growing up the walls, all over my dressers and furniture. It was inside my wooden floors.
I went to my agent and begged for help and asked for another adjuster. She said that they couldn't help me. My agent changed and I got a new agent. Same thing, begged for her to come out and look at the house. She said, "just get the work done, "we will probably cover it" I said, "probably!, I don't have the money to pay for this, what if they put a lien on my house? Again, begged for help. Nothing.
Again, a new agent. I tell her the same story. I was told to get a contractor out to the house and get an estimate. The contractor came out and gave an estimate of $24,000.00 just for the interior upstairs. Of course State Farm didn't like that price. Meanwhile I am highly allergic to the mold. I cash the $4,900.00 check around 2009. I was able to fix the roof. As soon as I cash the check State Farm tells me that they are going to cancel my insurance if I don't repair the rest of the house. WITH WHAT, I HAVE NO MONEY LEFT! My agent said if I got the estimates they wouldn't cancel my insurance. I did everything they told me to do. They called me on a Wednesday and told me as of the following day, I no longer have insurance on my home. Yes they can get away with it. When I filed a complaint with the State of Florida, my agent wasn't truthful and they got away with it. Now I can't get homeowners insurance because I have an open claim and damages. I can only get mortgate insurance.
I am still sick and have decided to gut the upstairs and not worry about fixing it. I just can't afford it.
I hope State Farm is proud of themselves! They sure did beat the little one this time. All they had to do was the right thing. I paid my premiums on time and never filed claims. Where were they when I need them. Don't ever think they are like a "good neighbor".
