  • Claim Handling - Unjustified Accusations
  • General - I feel abused by this company

Tornado Damaged my home on 4/27/2011. The company sent an IA, who called and made an appointment for Friday 4/29/11, for 8 am. Around 2 pm, I called him because it had long since pased 8 am, he said he was not coming that day. Would be there on Sat 4/30/11. He came on Saturday as he said, he didnt really talk to me, he decided that one of our neighbors was our contractor, which I dont quite understand his conclusions because he had arrived with his contractor referral. The contractor he referred brought 2 hispanics, who were very afraid of heights, he left them with no water, no lunch. The tarp they attempted to install blew off by nightfall.

He told the Ins Company, I was crazy, and that I was shopping contractors for the amount that I wanted. This guy was and is an IDIOT. I hired an Engineer, requested a meeting, the claim manager, the IA and the Engineer arrived, they did not look for damage, the claim manager didnt take out the estimate that the IA had written to see if he may have missed anything. They didnt do anything. EXCEPT the IA LIED. He said he had agreed cost to repair, with all contractors. He had not spoken to one, and lied saying that he had. I got a written statement from the contractor, who is a very reputable company who clearly said he lied. To cover his lies he got another agreement so he said from another contractor that restores furniture.

I have since spent over $ 10,000 fighting to get a fair settlement. I went to Appraisal and that is costing about $ 8,000 off the amount that should have been paid in the first place.

the claim manager offered me $ 700 to settle on August 18, 2011. They then sent me a check for $ 5,700 give or take. about $5,000 more than their offer. Then the Appraisal award came to around $78,000.00.

They have not paid me, and I guess they will make me file a suit to get the money they owe me.

IT really sucks, they have all of our premium dollars in a nice little pile thay invest and make more money. Their pile of our premium dollars are at their disposal to hire engineers, IA's, and Consultants, and Attorneys to fight us their customers, to keep us from getting what they owe us. After experiencing a horrib;e scary loss. The money they use to deny our claims comes from the money that they are suposed to use to pay for the damage for the property we are paying to protect. How bout that IRONY !!!

Mike, I did not see this response request until now. I reside in Jasper GA, which is Pickens County Georgia. I have still not completely settled my claim with Auto Owners, I still owe my builder and am in the process of obtaining a certificate of occupancy. I got so much grief from the Umpire that handled the appraisal. I didn't have the funds readily available, (I'm sure that any one would understand that my funds would be low) I paid the umpire $1,250.00 to start and the balance was paid after the Insurer paid me. But the umpire threatened to have me arrested, because he asked me to write a post dated check and he would hold, he cashed the check and the funds did not clear. It has been horrific and I am so sympathetic with all the people that go through this, and have to pay as much out of pocket as I have. It's not the way insurance is supposed to be handled
