Insurance Company: OneBeacon
Coverage Type: Business Insurance
- Claim Handling - Denial of Claim
I am a small business, and I had taken out loss-of-income insurance with OneBeacon. In April 2011, my entire state was hit with 10 F-5 tornadoes. While my business was not directly hit, one of the tornadoes took out the entire electric grid in the Northern half of the state. There were 60,000 people without electricity for 6 days. Of course, I couldn't operate without electricity, and I lost at least $5000 directly because of this. But OneBeacon denied my claim, saying that it didn't cover downed power lines. Technically, there were no downed power lines anywhere near my business. It was a massive disaster which affected the power grid. I have been unable to find an attorney to take my case. I think not only are they wrong in denying the claim, but they also represent bad faith. I immediately switched insurance companies and am now paying cheaper premiums for better coverage, but we are still feeling the effects of their refusal to pay.
